A typical question an optimist like myself may ask is, ‘Why contemplate Our Lady’s Sorrows?’

The answer, like Mary we all suffer, and she understands our pain and wants to comfort us. Mary experienced immense anxiety and grief during her life as foretold by Simeon’s prophecy. When these sorrows are contemplated, we recognize Our Lady knows misery, and can guide us by her example. Mary as our mother provides unconditional love for her children.  This motherly love is fundamentally the strongest of all bonds. All we need to do is ask for Mary to intercede.

During an extraordinary time of anguish, I begged for Mary’s intercession. As I witnessed my husband’s health decline, I experienced heartache beyond measure; I felt so alone. Tom died July 2, 2016. The miracle I had been believing in did not happen. I prayed to Mary for consolation, comfort, and most of all guidance. I prayed, I would not lose hope and pleaded with Mary to assist me. These days were so dark as I implored Our Lady to support me because I was losing faith. My request was answered; it took time, but through meditation in Our Lady of Sorrows, I received a vast feeling of peace.  This peace was unlike any I had ever experienced. I am so grateful for this gift; I do not know how I could have existed without this grace.

The miracle I had been praying for did not occur on earth, but I know, as with many miracles, it occurred in heaven.

The Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows is September 15, 2017.
