Sister Mary Rose Paula Foltz 1929-2018

Sister Mary Rose Paula was born Jean Foltz on July 17, 1929 in Covington, Kentucky. Her parents, Peter and Marie Walsh Foltz, raised four children. Jean was the youngest.  She described her childhood as fun and carefree.

She attended Blessed Sacrament School and Notre Dame Academy and entered the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1947 after graduation. Jean knew very early on that she wanted to be a sister. She admired the dedication, generosity and friendliness manifested by the Sisters of Notre Dame.

On August 12, 1949, Sister Mary Rose Paula made her first profession of vows. She started her ministry teaching kindergarten and primary grades while attending Villa Madonna College. She completed her bachelor's degree at Our Lady of Cincinnati and her master's degree at Xavier University. The following years were spent ministering to and teaching elementary grades and CCD religion classes. Sister Mary Rose Paula was a well-loved and respected principal for three local elementary schools. After her many years of teaching, Sister Mary Rose Paula served for eleven years as the Province Secretary, and then assisted in the school office at St. Columban in Loveland, Ohio.

Sister Mary Rose Paula loved teaching children and adored working alongside her community of sisters, whom she felt were her partners working for the same mission. Prayer was Sister Mary Rose Paula's highest priority. She said it nourished her for meeting the needs of others and growing closer to God and those she ministered to.

Sister Mary Rose Paula is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Robert Foltz, her sisters, Rosemary Austing and Catherine Warken. Sister leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.

Sr. Rose Paula was not only a great teacher of children, but also a great teacher in teaching others how to teach as she did for me.

She was the first person to really believe in me besides my parents. I can remember her taking my little hand over 25 years ago and telling me how wonderful first grade was going to be. She was an exquisite person and full of life. She is definitely in heaven looking down on us!

Such a loving and caring principal and sister. I remember her watching and waving from the convent window when my daughter was married at Sacred Heart. May God grant her eternal peace.

She was such a great person. I loved her laugh and the way she loved to squeeze the little ones. She was a true blessing to have in my life. Good bless her.
