Today, August 5, we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of the Snows, which is Sister Mary Norene McCormack's name day/feast day.

As legend has it, a couple prayed to Our Lady in the 4th century, wanting to leave their wealth to her. They asked her for a sign as to how they could do so. Our Lady appeared to them, instructing them to build a church. She said she would show them through snowfall--in warm Rome--where to build.

On the night of August 5, 352, snow fell in Rome at the site where she wanted them to build a church in her honor. The site is where the present day St. Mary Major Basilica is located. This church is the Pope’s church.

Sister Mary Norene McCormack thought that if the Pope could have that church, so could she! Sister Norene celebrates her name day on August 5 with Our Lady of the Snows as her patron saint. Sister Norene said feels a special connection with Mary through their mutual love of children. So, Sister Norene’s love of Our Lady and also her love of snow seemed a perfect match for celebrating this feast day.

Our Lady of the Snows, pray for us.
