When I think of Mary as the Immaculate Conception, I think of snow-white winter or bright sun and summer – all bright, light, shining. There’s something so profound that Mary would be born without any sin, that only goodness lived within her.

Mary was open to receiving God’s love in her life and chose to live God’s love in every aspect, every moment of her life. Mary received God’s gift of freedom. She chose to say ‘yes’ to God each time. Adam and Eve were created without original sin. Like Mary, they had the freedom to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to God. They chose to say ‘No.’ Mary is the ‘New Eve,’ the new Mother of Salvation for each of us who believe in her Son, Jesus.

Through her life and love, through the choices she made, she showed us how to respond freely, openly, and lovingly to God’s invitation.

On this Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the patroness of the United States, may the brilliance and purity of Mary’s love shine forth in all our lives. Let us in the U.S. pray that the citizens of our country will respond in holiness and with openness to God’s invitation. Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, pray for us.
