Alvin and Mary Appel celebrated, August 21, their 70th wedding anniversary. Love, faith and family are the secrets to a lifelong marriage, they say.

Mary Appel is a Notre Dame Associate, the biological sister of Sister Mary Janet Stamm, and on the front page of the October 19, 2018 issue of the Messenger. Mary and her husband, Al, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on August 21, 2018 and discussed the longevity of their marriage with Laura Keener, editor of the Messenger. Excerpt below:

If you call Alvin and Mary (Stamm) Appel and get their answering machine, Mr. Appel will tell you to leave a message because they may be “out in the Appel orchard.” And that Appel orchard, begun 70 years ago, is large and growing. This year Mr. and Mrs. Appel celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. They were one of 180 couples attending this year’s annual Wedding Anniversary Vespers at the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in September. Of the attending couples, they are the couple celebrating the most years of marriage this year.

At the vespers, Bishop Roger Foys asked Mrs. Appel what the secret is for a long marriage?

“I told the bishop love is the secret to lifelong marriage,” she said. “So many times through marriage you get upset, and I would get angry with him and then I fall in love all over again. You heal, you forgive, you talk.”
