A Christmas Story

The other day, I went to help at an after-school program which Sr. Cormarie and Sr. Janet put on in a nearby neighborhood. The students were going to do a performance of the Christmas story.

The children ran off of the bus and into the community room. It was a little chaotic!

I was to help four children get ready to be the angels. One of the angels was a little girl who was six at most and so tiny. The robe went well beyond her feet, so we cinched it up and tried belting it in place. During the performance, you could see it falling down, and her hiking it back up.

After the performance, that little angel came up to me and said, "Sister, can I hold the baby Jesus?" So we walked over to the manger, and I lifted out the baby doll and handed it to her.

She took the baby Jesus, looked at him...then she FELL TO HER KNEES, still holding the baby.

Her eyes stayed affixed and she began gently patting his arm and stroking his hair. It was a beautiful sight to behold: a tiny girl amazed by the mystery and wonder of the baby Jesus.

After a few minutes I asked her if she would like to say a prayer. She nodded, we prayed, she put the baby Jesus back into the manger, and then she hopped along to be with the rest of the children.

Sister, I think the behavior of this young girl was inspired by you. Your gentleness and great faith are a wonder to witness.

Beautiful Christmas story about the innocence of a child wanting to hold the Baby Jesus, Proud of my cousin Sr. Cormarie being one of the directors of the play.
