Farewell to Sister Catharina Maria Son

The sisters said goodbye to Sister Catharina Maria on Friday January 25. She arrived from the Korean Province last March to study English as a second language at Xavier University. Sister returns to Korea to serve as assistant vocation directress for her province. Sister will be missed because of her joyful presence, her enthusiasm and her helpfulness. Sister's cheerful manner and incredible piano playing ability endeared her to the community. At the conclusion of liturgy, Fr. Rosing gave Sister Catharina a blessing for safe travel and a happy return to her homeland.

Stained Glass Windows Restoration Complete

The stained glass windows arrived from the Bovard Studio on Monday, January 28th for re-installation. The windows, which were removed in July of 2007, have undergone a major restoration including re-leading, cleaning and repair. The windows, crafted by the renowned Bavarian stained glass company, F.X. Zettler, were originally installed in 1927 when the chapel was built. Age, environment and outside elements caused the windows to bow and buckle. Moisture trapped against the windows and their protective covering created oxidation and hastened the deterioration. The reinstallation should be complete by mid-February. The rededication and blessing of these windows will be on Sunday, March 30 at 2:00 p.m. with a reception following. All are invited to join the sisters in this special occasion.

St. Augustine Service Learning Project

Ten students from St. Augustine School, Covington, recently visited the provincial house for a Service Learning Project. Service Learning is a powerful teaching method, which actively engages the students to achieve learning goals and meet community needs through meaningful service. Service Learning involves the students' use of their talents to make a difference in the community. They are challenged to think critically, identify a need, solve a problem, and be of service to others. In other words they LEARN through SERVICE.

While at the provincial house, the fifth through eighth grade students met with some of the Sisters and the provincial house chaplain who were interested in learning computer skills. After the computer session that featured topics such as mouse personalities, Internet uses, search techniques, and introducing some interesting websites such as www.freerice.com, they shared a meal in the dining room. Sister Mary Laurence thought the project was a good learning event for both students and Sisters. "We were able to interact one-on-one with each other, which was a new experience for us." Father Bob Rosing, chaplain, learned many new computer skills and was very impressed with the knowledge and skills the of the St. Augustine students. The St. Augustine students, under the supervision of their computer lab teacher, Sister Maria Therese, plan to visit again soon for another lesson.

December 2007 ND Pulse Online

The December 2007 ND Pulse features Sister Catharina Maria Son, a Sister of Notre Dame from the Incheon Province of South Korea, who arrived in the United States in April 2007 to study English. Raised in Daegu (also called Taegu), South Korea's fourth largest city - population 2.5 million - Sister Catharina Maria was born Jihye (gee-hay), which means wisdom. Alzheimer's Disease Seminar

Micki Shea of the Greater Cincinnati Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association is presenting a three-part series on Alzheimer's Disease for the sisters and staff of the Provincial House. This informative series focuses on the symptoms and characteristics of Alzheimer's Disease, its progressive nature and emotional impact on the individual and caregiver. Alzheimer's Disease affects one out of eight people over the age of 65 and one of two people over the age of 85.

Annual Memorial Mass for Deceased Sisters of Notre Dame

Almost 200 people attended the annual Memorial Mass for the deceased Sisters of Notre Dame, which was held on Sunday, November 4. The theme of this year's celebration was "To Live in the Hearts of Others is Not to Die," from the poet Kahlil Gibran. At the conclusion of the Liturgy a service of remembrance was held. Each deceased Sister's name was read and a family member or friend was invited to come forward and receive a token of remembrance in her memory. The Liturgy was followed by a cemetery visit and a reception where family, friends and Sisters could visit and share stories and memories.

Contemplating the Mind and Heart of Jesus

Father Bob Rosing, Chaplain at St. Joseph Heights, is giving a series of talks on "Contemplating the Mind and Heart of Jesus." These talks are based on The Book of Glory from the Gospel of John, chapters 13 - 17.
