What We Do

Volunteer at St. Julie Mission in Buseesa, Uganda

Do you want to broaden your vision of the world and your place in it?

Do you want to concretize your commitment to justice and peace?

Do you want to strengthen your faith and deepen your spirituality?

Do you want to experience church in a new way?

Volunteering at the St. Julie Mission in Uganda provides opportunities to pursue these goals and more.

Current volunteer opening:

One (1) volunteer teacher during January 2020-December 2020 school year. Will teach S1 computer, S1 mathematics, and S1 physical education; other mission duties as needed. S1 is the first year of secondary school in Uganda.

Who should apply to volunteer?

Healthy women at least 21 years of age who desire to spend time giving and learning in a developing country are invited to apply. You will have the opportunity for living simply, often without conveniences such as hot water and electricity. Being immersed in an unfamiliar culture will draw on your ability to be flexible, to accept what is not really understood, to be patient. While other volunteers (some of whom may be from a program in Germany) might be participating alongside you, at times you will likely experience loneliness, uncertainty and confusion. You must be independent enough to weather these difficulties.

What are the eligibility criteria?

  • U.S. citizen, female, 21 years of age or older who lives in or can easily travel to the Greater Cincinnati area for interviews and overnight orientation
  • College degree (preferred) and/or professional skills useful in the mission
  • Availability to volunteer at the mission for ten to twelve months
  • Ability to meet passport, visa and medical requirements
  • Commitment to work with and live among the people of rural Uganda
  • Readiness to live in a predominantly Catholic community and participate in its regular religious services
  • Willingness to learn about and have some lived experience with the Sisters of Notre Dame who sponsor the mission
  • Willingness to participate in fundraising for the program
  • Participation in a multicultural training program
  • Agreeing to and passing a background check
