The Mission in Uganda, East Africa

In 1992, Bishop Deogratias Byabazaire, Bishop of Hoima Catholic Diocese in Uganda, East Africa, recognized the need to raise educational standards and prepare children for Catholic leadership within the Kibaale district. In July 1995, four Sisters of Notre Dame from the Kentucky and California Provinces arrived in Buseesa, Uganda, with a mission, vision, and goals of transforming educational opportunities; especially for women and children.

Through many prayers and financial supports from benefactors back home, the Sisters of Notre Dame opened St. Julie Primary School in 1998 to serve children in grades first through seventh.  Five years later (2003) Notre Dame Academy Secondary School was also founded to help young women advance their education and foster a fullness of life.  Currently the Sisters of Notre Dame now operate two schools, a convent, and a women’s co-op farm.
