St. Nicholas Day was celebrated in grand style at the Sisters of Notre Dame Provincial House on Tuesday, December 6th, 2011. The Sisters got into the spirit by dressing up and caroling throughout the hallways in Lourdes Hall. This annual tradition at the Provincial House dates back to their earliest days of the Sisters’ German heritage. The evening festivities began with carols, followed by a delicious dinner, which included: apple turnovers, dates, nuts, fruit, and candies. The celebration concluded with each of the Sisters receiving a small gift as a thank you for their unceasing drive and desire to continue the mission of Jesus Christ to those they serve.
St. Nicholas was a bishop of Mira, on the southern coast of Turkey, in the first half of the 4th century. Obeying Jesus’ words to “sell what you own and give the money to the poor,” Nicholas used his whole family inheritance to assist the need of the sick and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. By his example of generosity to those in need, especially children, St. Nicholas continues to be a model for all of us on how to live a compassionate life.
