Construction is underway on the new A-level school at Notre Dame Senior Secondary Academy in Buseesa.

A-Level Construction

A journey begins with a single step. In 1995, our missionaries in Buseesa, Uganda took the first steps in founding the St. Julie Mission. It has been our goal to provide a comprehensive, quality Catholic education in rural Buseesa, especially for young women. Since the first steps, the mission has grown to provide a nursery school, primary boarding school, O-level all-girls secondary school, a formation center, and a farm. There's one more stop we have to add to make our students' academic journey complete--and that is an A-level secondary school.

Before Christmas, we broke ground on the A-level school at Notre Dame Senior Secondary Academy.

What is A-level? A-level is the final stage of secondary education in Uganda. Passing the A-level is required to continue to university.

Currently, Notre Dame Senior Secondary Academy offers O-level, or grades S1-S4. We hope to complete the addition of the A-level school by spring 2019, so that we can also offer grades S5 and S6.

Water Tank Explosion

Just before Christmas, a water tank exploded at Notre Dame Senior Secondary Academy in Buseesa. Thanks be to God that the school year had already ended and students were not on-site when it occurred.

The sisters estimate that they lost 20,000 liters (5,283 gallons) of water.

New Truck

Thank you to everyone who donated toward the new 4x4 truck. Sisters picked it up in Kampala on December 18, 2017.

25 Years in Africa

Sisters convened in Arusha, Tanzania on December 19, 2017 to mark the 25th anniversary of the first SNDs in Africa.

Cori Stitt with a painting she made for the 25th anniversary of the first SNDs in Africa. Cori attends Holy Cross High School in Covington, KY.

SNDs from the East Africa Delegation attended, which includes sisters from Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. Sr. Mary Joell Overman also traveled to Arusha to celebrate, as she was Superior General when the first SNDs arrived in Africa in 1992.

Sr. Joell took as a gift from the Covington Province two wooden candlestick holders and a beautiful painting by Cori Stitt, a Holy Cross High School student.
