Sister Mary Ethel Parrott, SND, recipient of the 2018 Judith Clabes Lifetime Achievement Award

Sister Mary Ethel Parrott was awarded the Judith Clabes Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2018 Outstanding Women of Northern Kentucky Awards Luncheon.

The Outstanding Women of Northern Kentucky Awards honor women who exemplify notable achievement, outstanding service in their professions or to the Northern Kentucky community, and the qualities of personal integrity, perseverance and leadership.

Sister Mary Ethel was nominated by Dr. Laura Koehl, president of Notre Dame Academy, for the contributions she has made to the community and in hundreds of students' lives as a physics teacher.

Upon accepting the award, Sister Mary Ethel remarked that she believes there are two transformative things in the world: education and love. She has been fortunate to experience, and she hopes share, an abundance of both.

A little bit about Sister Mary Ethel...

Sister Mary Ethel Parrott considers herself one of the luckiest women around. She is the first of eight athletically and/or academically talented children of Mae and Edgar (Shorty) Parrott. Her good fortune included pre-college education with Benedictine, Divine Providence, and Notre Dame Sisters (SND).

Upon entering the SND community after graduating from Notre Dame Academy (NDA), Sister Mary Ethel attained her physics degree from Thomas More College. While there, she was mentored by the unsurpassable Sister Eleanor Fox at a time when TMC was recognized as one of the top five undergraduate physics programs in the United States. She enjoyed graduate courses at many universities and was awarded her master's degree in physics from the University of Kentucky.

For most of her career, she lived and ministered with a very supportive SND community at NDA. On most days she experienced NDA as a "teacher's paradise," and was privileged to partner with outstanding students, parents, and colleagues. Receiving one of the early Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science Teaching has opened up a world of opportunities for her. She was attracted to intense national involvement and leadership with the science fair and physics teaching communities.

Sister Mary Ethel has been blessed with participation with SNDs nationally and internationally. Every day she discovers more of God's goodness and hopes she can convey some of that experience to one person at a time.
