The Sisters of Notre Dame are missioned to proclaim God’s goodness and provident care, but we do not do it alone! Thousands of individuals and organizations dedicate their prayers, their time, and various resources to share in carrying out Jesus’ mission near and far. Each month we pass the mic to one or more of our partners and shine the spotlight on their relationship with the Sisters of Notre Dame.

September 2014 Partner Spotlight: Mary Estelle Roesel (Park Hills, KY)

You may have seen Mary Estelle Roesel, an Associate of the Sisters of Notre Dame, in the background of photos from just about any and every SND event. She is the one making funny faces or trying to hide from the camera. Despite the coupling of her photo aversion with our love for photo-taking, Mary Estelle spends a great deal of time with the Sisters of Notre Dame, assisting with whatever is needed around the provincial house and, of course, sharing her wry sense of humor. She took a few moments to tell us about herself and her relationship with SND:

"I decided to volunteer with the Sisters of Notre Dame because of the very good example my mother and father showed to my two brothers and me. They volunteered by working a booth for St. Stephen’s festival ever since I was a little girl. My parents also did many things to help the sisters at the convent and the school.

When I became an Associate, I became closer to the sisters and felt a calling to help them when I could. I love going to Lourdes Hall to maybe help put a smile on one of the sisters’ faces.

One of my rewarding experiences here is being close to God. When I come in the convent, I love to open the chapel doors and say, “Hi Jesus! This is Mary Estelle, I love you!”

Outside of volunteering with the sisters, I play cards with my special Nifty Fifty Girls! (Girls?) Some of us even went to grade school together and, of course, to Notre Dame Academy. I also enjoy going to my great nieces’ and nephews’ soccer and basketball games. At one time I loved playing tennis, but I had to stop playing when I started seeing two balls being served to me!

I enjoy working with the sisters because I feel their spirituality and dedication to Mary. I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention the sisters’ friendship and prayers. I always receive kind words expressing their appreciation for my help and visit."
