Sister Mary Edwin and Sister Mary Paul celebrate the new wing in 1980.

On March 9,1958 the addition to St. Joseph Heights provided new provincial quarters, a Lourdes Hall chapel, 6 private rooms, as well as a large refectory and kitchen. That new wing was Mary Hall.

History has a way of repeating itself. “Growing pains” were again experienced in 1979, calling for additional space for the dear older sisters and summer accommodations for the sisters residing in affiliations during the apostolic year. Joseph Hall with its 80 new rooms became a reality and was dedicated on December 8,1980 by Bishop William Hughes.

In 1979 a progress report on some of the highlights of the construction included:

  • February- Opening of Bid Day.
  • April- Elevator shaft dug, hole 42 feet deep for the piston. Piston must be as deep as the building is tall.
  • May- Much rain again.
  • October- Windows arrive.

As soon as building is “buttoned up” and can maintain a temperature of 55 degrees, the plywood partitions will be placed.

The Ceremony of Blessing was scheduled for 2 pm on December 8, 1980, followed by an open house. The open house continued on Sunday afternoon, December 14, for those unable to attend on the holy day. The Bishop prayed, “Send your holy angel to watch over, to cherish, to protect, to abide with, and to defend all who dwell in this house. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

The 1980 addition expanded the area of care for sisters retired from the active apostolate. To the left is Sr. Mary Edwin who was administrator at several Kentucky nursing facilities: Notre Dame Hospital, Lynch; St. Charles Care Center, Covington; and St. Claire Regional Medical Center, Morehead. To the right is Sr. Mary Paul who set a record for living to celebrate her 101st birthday in 2016!
