Notre Dame aspirants on the pond. Aspirants were girls of high school age who attended Notre Dame Academy on Fifth Street in Covington, KY and boarded/lived at the provincial house.

Did you know...the current parking lot at St. Joseph Heights was formerly a pond?

The current, large blacktop parking lot in the back yard of the provincial center replaced the original pond on Mr. Heck’s farm. In 1912 when Mr. Heck agreed to sell his farm to the Sisters of Notre Dame, the property included a pond.

An amazing event occurred on the morning of March 18, 1933. At this time the towns in the vicinity were emerging from the flood waters of the Ohio and Licking Rivers. Another heavy downpour of rain had visited the area on that Saturday morning.

According to the convent annals:

“One of the Sisters came hurriedly to Sister Superior’s office exclaiming, ‘The pond is running away!’

Truly it was. The dam gave way under the pressure of the heavy rains and the water rushed through like Niagara Falls, leaving nothing but a mud puddle where once had been a lovely pond.”
