History of St. Joseph Heights: New Wing

May 10, 1956 was groundbreaking for the new wing at St. Joseph Heights. Prior to Mass, Bishop Mulloy removed three shovelfuls of dirt outside the building during the groundbreaking ceremony. Then he returned to chapel, that was filled to overflowing. In his sermon the Bishop stated, “You have gathered brick and mortar and, more important, some of the money required for the project. The work is God’s. In His strength may you go forward so that more witnesses for Christ may be trained here at St. Joseph Heights for the years to come.” The new wing was called Mary Hall.

Mark J. Neff, FACHE, St. Claire HealthCare President/CEO has announced that he will retire effective January 31, 2019. Neff stated, “I’m sad to leave, but excited about a new adventure as my wife, Diane, and I are moving back to Notre Dame to be closer to our children and grandchildren.”

Sister Mary Francello Orth 1926-2018

Sister Mary Francello (Agnes Barbara) Orth was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on August 7, 1926, to Fidel and Barbara Orth. She was the second oldest of four children. Her parents' nurturing and strong faith created a loving environment for her family.

Pete is a dear and longtime partner of the Sisters of Notre Dame. You may have seen him at a United in Prayer event, volunteering at the 4th of July Festival, or attending the Uganda Mission Pancake Breakfast. Mission Advancement staff asked Pete about his partnership with and role in the Notre Dame community. His responses were extremely humbling!

Sisters Nancy Marie Schutte 1938-2018

Sister Nancy Marie (formerly Sister Virginia Rose) Schutte was born on March 26, 1938, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was the oldest of three children. Though her childhood was challenging due to a severe hip infection and the loss of her mother at an early age, sorrow was overpowered by the love her family gave to her.

Sister Mary Loise (Etheldreda Antoinette) Lay was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on June 18, 1922, to Louis and Ida Lay. She and her younger sister enjoyed a happy childhood with loving and devoted parents.

History of St. Joseph Heights: Buried Treasure!

Mr. Bob Kress is a treasure hunter. He attends the monthly meetings of Northern Kentucky Treasure Hunters. After retiring, Mr. Kress was able to spend more time with his hobby of metal detecting. In 2011 he requested permission to search the grounds of the provincial center for historic and interesting artifacts. Sr. M. Joan Terese Niklas, provincial archivist, was delighted with the project and hoped that the buried treasure of the St. Joseph medal (planted over 100 years ago) might be discovered.

Sister Mary Lea Paolucci 1933-2018

Sister Mary Lea (formerly Sister Berndette) Paolucci was born on March 9, 1933. She was the oldest of five children born to Mary and Tony Paolucci. Theirs was a loving family where Lea was taught to pray and show respect to all people.  Sister Lea attended St. Stephen School and Notre Dame Academy. She felt that her four years at Notre Dame Academy drew her closer to God. On August 8, 1951, she entered the Sisters of Notre Dame and made her first profession on August 25, 1953.

BLOG: Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (May 31)

The email was sent to the Homebound Ministry Members in July with an unusual request for daily Communion to be delivered to a parishioner named Lynn.  In March, she had finally gone to the doctor after a year of pain and was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.  Lynn had just spent months in and out of Vanderbilt Medical Center where the doctors determined there were no further treatment options, so they sent her home with hospice care and two to three weeks to live.

History of St. Joseph Heights: The Dedication

Ground was broken on March 19, 1926 – the feast of St. Joseph. The cornerstone was laid on September 12, 1926. From 2:30 to 3:00 p.m. a procession of children and adults, headed by acolytes, clergy and Bishop Howard, traveled from the sisters’ residence in Covington to the new building site. Six thousand participants were in the procession! Bishop Howard performed the ceremony, so rich in beauty and significance.

Sr. Dolores Marie Boemker 1925-2018

Sister Dolores Marie (formerly Sister Mary Winfrid) was born on August 12, 1925, in Covington, Kentucky.  Her parents, Albert and Sarah Hart Boemker raised six children. Dolores was their third child and only daughter. She described her childhood as very caring and secure, made so by very loving parents.

In this most intimate of moments, Mary is surrounded and eventually permeated with an all-embracing love.

Sr. Mary Sebastien Schmidt 1927-2018

Sr. Mary Sebastien (Jean) Schmidt was born on May 27, 1927 to Helen and Joseph Schmidt in Newport, Kentucky. She was the second of two children. She attended St. Stephen Elementary School and graduated from Notre Dame Academy in 1945. She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame in September of the same year, making her profession of vows on August 11, 1948.

In 1914 the Sisters were encouraged by the purchase of the Heck Farm. The next challenge was the acquisition of funds to construct St. Joseph Heights. World War years (1914-1918) strained communication with the Generalate in Germany. Divine Providence supplied Mr. John F. Cook.

Since Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 there have been many more school shootings with six shootings so far in 2018. We pray for those who grieve and for those who have fallen. We acknowledge that our prayer is not enough.

History of St. Joseph Heights: Heck Farm

When Theodore Heck sold his farm to the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1912 (plus two additional acres in 1914), the Sisters’ property extended to approximately 54 acres. Twenty-two thousand dollars was the total price of the Heck Farm.

This prestigious award was established in 2009 in honor of the Reverend William Jefferson Cooper, Sr., of Westport, Kentucky. Mr. Cooper, a man of faith and vision, founded the Kentucky Governor's Prayer Breakfast.

History of St. Joseph Heights, Part II

After purchasing six acres of the Old Fedders Farm on July 6, 1907, the Sisters of Notre Dame bought 33.75 acres and 20 poles of the adjoining farm from Albert and Anna Berry on September 18, 1907. This farm cost $17,000. The Sisters were another step closer to their goal: the Heck Farm that was adjacent to the Berry Farm. However, Theodore Heck was not yet ready to sell his farm.
