Thoughts of an SND missionary in Uganda...

We didn't want to make (the African nation) "Little America." There's a richness in the (African) character. They have so much to give us, and we don't want to take that richness from their culture... Sr. Mary Janet Stamm, SND (one of the original Ugandan missionary sisters)

The Mission in Buseesa, Uganda

In July of 1995, four Sisters of Notre Dame began the St. Julie convent and mission in Uganda, East Africa. Invited by the Bishop of the Diocese of Hoima, the purpose of the mission was to bring the Good News of Jesus and education to the poorest, "lost counties" in the most remote part of Uganda. The sisters opened a convent in rural Uganda with the goal of building a school and bringing quality Catholic education to this part of the world. Working without electricity, running water, and adequate roads, the Sisters of Notre Dame, with the help of their many supporters at home, have built a school and mission in the Kibale, the 'forgotten district" of Uganda. The Sisters of Notre Dame are now well established in Buseesa, Uganda. St. Julie Primary School opened in 1997 with 39 students in grade 3, adding a grade level each year through grade 7. Notre Dame Academy Senior Secondary School opened in 2003. St. Julie School and NDASSS now educate over 200 students each year.

Four sisters from the Immaculate Heart of Mary Province in Covington are presently serving as missionaries in Uganda. Sister Mary Janet and Sister Mary Delrita, two of the original four missionary sisters are still serving. Sister Mary Janet is currently Deputy Head Teacher and Sister Mary Delrita presently serves as Formation Director. Also ministering in Buseesa are Sister Anita Marie, teacher at Notre Dame Academy and Sister Mary Rita, Head Teacher at Notre Dame Academy.

Mission Sisters:

Prayer for Our Missionaries

Heavenly Father, you sent your Son, Jesus Christ, to reveal your goodness and love to the the world. Jesus, in turn, calls us to assist him in spreading the Good News to all people.

We ask for your blessings and protection on our Sisters, who have been called to proclaim God's goodness to the people of the Hoima Diocese in Buseesa, Uganda, Africa.
