What are the charism and mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame?

We recognize a deep experience of God's goodness and provident care as our special gift from the Holy Spirit. This charism, lived by St. Julie Billiart, Sr. Maria Aloysia, and our first Coesfeld sisters, leads us to entrust ourselves to our good and loving God. It impels us in our mission to bring the experience of God's goodness and provident care into the lives of others, especially the poor and marginalized.

Who is invited to be an Associate?

Christian women and men, married and single, are invited. Associates are called to share in the mission of Jesus Christ through the charism, spirituality, and ministry of the Sisters of Notre Dame by a non-vowed commitment.

What is the mission statement of the Associates?

Drawn by the charism of the Sisters of Notre Dame, we are called by our good and provident God to be a hope-filled presence in the world.

This relationship

  • deepens our relationship with God through prayer
  • moves us to solidarity with the poor and marginalized
  • impels us to radical discipleship

What does being an Associate involve? The relationship between the Associates and the Sisters of Notre Dame involves a commitment on the part of both.

For the Associates there is a willingness to

  • witness to God's goodness and provident care in daily life
  • participate fully in the Associate formation program
  • share gifts and talents through service to others, especially the poor and marginalized
  • nurture a fervent liturgical and personal prayer life
  • pray daily for the worldwide mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame
  • foster a devotion to Mary
For the Sisters there is a willingness to
  • live and share the charism, spirituality, and ministry of the Sisters of Notre Dame
  • welcome and companion the Associates
  • provide an appropriate formation program
  • offer opportunities for service in various ministries, especially with the poor and marginalized
  • linvite Associates for community liturgies and other celebrations
  • pray daily for the Associates
  • communicate appropriate congregational news

The Associate commitment is made for as long as is mutually agreed upon between the Associate and the Sisters of Notre Dame. Unlike vowed members, Associates do not take vows, vote, or participate in the local or general government of the congregation. There is no mutual financial or legal responsibility between Associates and the Sisters of Notre Dame.

"You are not asked to do all the good in the world, but just the bit that lies in your power."
St. Julie Billiart

"Most important in all our works is the uniting of all our actions with the works of the Divine Savior. Thus we make gold out of stones."
Sr. M. Aloysia
